One major variety of the 1835 Coronet Head Large Cent (Penny) has a Small number "8" in the date and small stars on the obverse of the coin. There are various combinations of these features and 2 main varieties total. The differences and comparisons are shown below:

Large "8" vs Small "8" in the 1835 date - The large "8" will appear taller and larger relative to the "3" and other numbers while the small "8" will appear level with the "3" as depicted in the example image below:
