One major variety is the 1824/4 Capped Bust Half Dollar with actually has two sub-variety types. This variety features a 4 over 4 overdate resulting from an 1824 date struck over another 1824 date.

The type 1 of the 1824/4 overdate features the 2 and 4 much closer together compared to the type 2 variety. The top of the underlying first "4" is seen just to the left of the top of the overlying second "4" as it was originally struck too far to the left. The type 2 of the 1824/4 also features the same underlying "4" characteristics - but the 2 and 4 much further apart compared to the type 1 variety. There are two line features at the bottom-left and bottom-right of the "4" on this variety that extend towards the rim of the coin.

Collectors often confuse the 1824/4 varieties with the 1824/1 variety. The way to distinguish them is to view the spacing between the numbers "2" and "4". The 1824/1 variety has almost no spacing and the numbers are almost touching. The 1824/4 repunched overdate was likely the result of the US Mint engraver trying to spread the numbers apart more.
