What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.): There were two major varieties of the 1836 Classic Head $2.50 Gold Quarter Eagle. These two varieties had a slightly difference styling of the 1836 date - so the difference can be found by viewing the numbers. The Script "8" variety features a thinner digit of the number "8" but the spacing within the inner bottom and top halves of the "8" are wider and more oval-shaped. The number "1" in the date is slightly taller and comes up to a higher point. The Block "8" variety features a thicker digit of the number "8" with block-like inner bottom and top spaces - both with less spacing inside. The "1" in the date is slightly shorter and the upper tip comes up to a lower point than the other variety. The difference between the 1836 Script 8 vs Block 8 gold quarter eagle is depicted above in the example comparison image.
