There are two major varieties of the 1866 S Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle. This (rarer and more valuable) variety is known as the Type 1 "No Motto" reverse - which does not feature the motto and banner "IN GOD WE TRUST" above the eagle on the reverse of the coin.
