There are two major varieties of the 1873 $5 Liberty Head Gold Half Eagle. One variety is known as the "Open 3" - which features wide spacing between the top and bottom ends of the number "3" in the 1873 date - as depicted above (Source of example image is courtesy of Heritage Auction Galleries). The "Closed 3" variety has much narrower spacing and a more closed up number "3".
