What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.): There were two major varieties of the 1822 Capped Bust Half Dollar. The most common variety is simply the "Normal Date" variety which depicts no major errors or special features - as depicted above. The other major variety is the 1822/1 overdate error which features an 1822 date stuck over an 1821 date in the die - which resulted in a "2" over "1" on the coins. Parts of the underlying "1" can be seen between the base and center of the "2" on the right side as depicted by the upper-right arrow below. The easiest way to identify this coin is to note how the last "2" is much thicker and bolder than the first "2" in the date - particularly the base and the curl on the tip of the "2" is much thicker.
