One major variety of the 1873 Large Indian Princess Head Gold Dollar features a Closed "3". There were two major styles of the 1873 date - specifically the number "3". The two ends (top and bottom) of the number "3" in the Closed 3 variety are nearly touching with virtually no space between them. The Open 3 variety has a much larger space between the two ends of the number "3". The difference between the Closed 3 vs Open 3 varieties is easily distinguishable and is depicted below in the example comparison image:
