What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.): 1866 was a transitional year for the $20 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle where the design on the reverse of the coin was changed to include the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" within the circle of stars above the eagle. Depicted above is the newer "With Motto" variety featuring the motto - which is the more common variety. The San Francisco Mint also produced a "No Motto" variety earlier in 1866 as well.
