What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.): There were multiple varieties of the 1817 Capped Bust Half Dollar. The most common variety is simply the "Normal Date" variety which featured no errors or special features as depicted in the image above. There were three major varieties of the 1817 date. One variety is the 1817/3 Overdate which features an 1817 date struck over an 1813 date which resulted in an underlying "3" being clearly visible around the "7" as depicted below:
A similar variety is the 1817/4 half dollar which features a "7" over "4" overdate. However this variety is extremely rare and valuable - making it one of the most valuable varieties in the entire half dollar series:
