1812/1 Capped Bust Half Dollar - Large 8 - 2 Over 1
There were two major varieties of the 1812/1 Capped Bust Half Dollar and both varieties had a 2 Over 1 overdate error in which an 1812 date was struck over an 1811 date. The Small "8" variety had a smaller number "8" and thinner numbers. The rare and valuable Large "8" variety (depicted above) had a larger number "8" in the date along with thicker letters. The underlying "1" is also more difficult to identify in the large 8 variety. The difference between the 1812/1 Small 8 vs Large 8 Capped Bust Half Dollar is depicted below in the example comparison image.
