What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.): There were a few major varieties of the 1797 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. Two varieties deal with the number of stars on the obverse of the coin. One variety features 9 stars on the left side and 7 stars on the right side. The other variety features 10 stars on the left and 6 on the right. The difference between the two varieties (10x6 stars vs 9x7 stars) is depicted above in the example comparison image of the coins.
There are also two varieties for the reverse of the coin as well. One variety features larger letters in the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" while the other features smaller letters. (The 9/7 stars obverse variety can have either have small letters or large letters on the reverse - the 10/6 stars obverse variety all have large letters on the reverse.) It is very easy to distinguish the size difference between the letters. Also - The large letters have less space between the letters and the rim of the coin - while the small letters have a much larger space between the letters and rim of the coin. The difference between the 1797 large letters vs small letters silver dollar is depicted below in the example comparison image:
