1833 Large Date - Capped Bust $5 Gold Half Eagle - Five Dollars
There were two major varieties of the 1833 $5 Gold Capped Bust Half Eagle. One variety features a large 1833 date on the obverse of the coin (as depicted above - Source of example image is courtesy of Heritage Auction Galleries). The difference between the Large Date vs Small Date is fairly easy to distinguish. The Large Date has numbers spread out more with more spacing between the numbers - whereas the Small Date has numbers closer together. This can easily be seen by the spacing between the number 3's. The style of the number "8" in the date is also very different - the inside bottom and top portion of the "8" is more narrow in the larger date and wider in the smaller date.
