1853 Liberty Head $20 Gold Double Eagle Varieties - Twenty Dollars - Small vs Large Date
There were two major varieties of the 1854 $20 Gold Liberty Head Double Eagle. One variety features a small 1854 date while the other features a larger date with larger numbers. The Large Date variety is a bit rarer and more valuable (especially in higher grade conditions). The difference between the Large Date vs Small Date is depicted above in the example comparison image. Note the size differences in the numbers and also the spacing between the numbers and the bottom of the liberty head bust. Source of example images is courtesy of Heritage Auction Galleries.
