What This Coin Looks Like (Obverse, Reverse, Mint Mark Location, Special Features, etc.):
1866 S No Motto Liberty Head $20 Gold Double Eagle - Twenty Dollars
1866 was a transitional year for the $20 Liberty Head Gold Double Eagle where the design on the reverse of the coin was changed to include the motto "IN GOD WE TRUST" within the circle of stars above the eagle. Depicted above is the original "No Motto" variety without this motto - which is the rarer and more valuable variety. The San Francisco Mint also produced a "With Motto" variety later in 1866 as well.
