Starting in 2010, a new commemorative coin series was released, known as America the Beautiful Quarters (or ATB Quarters). This new collection is a similar program to the 50 Statehood Quarters Program that ran from 1999 up until 2009. This time around there would be a new design on the reverse of the quarter for a National Park, National Memorial or other site, for each State. 5 different designs on the back of the quarter would be released each year. The coins would be released in the order of the date in which each park or site became a National Site.
Due to the success of the 50 State Quarter program, and the 2009 extension for the District of Columbia and US Territories Quarters, new legislation was called for the new coin series. On June 4, 2008, Representative Mike Castle (R-Delaware) introduced the bill to Congress. Castle was also the one who spearheaded the efforts for the 50 State Quarters program years before. Congress authorized the America's Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act bill in 2008 and was signed into law by US President George W. Bush on December 23, 2008.
The first coins would be released in 2010. The obverse (front side or heads side) of the coin would depict the modified version of John Flanagan's original 1932 design of the Washington Quarter, depicting a bust of Washington. This modified version is the same one used during the 50 State Quarter program, a smaller bust of the first US President, designed by William Cousins. This would be the common obverse that would be used every year and for every design of the national park quarters. The text "UNITED STATE OF AMERICA" would be placed along the upper rim while "QUARTER DOLLAR" would be placed along the bottom rim. The word "LIBERTY" would be just to the left of Washington and "IN GOD WE TRUST" to the right, with the mint mark just below.
The plan is to run the program from between 2010 and 2021, which 56 different quarter designs on the reverse of the coin (back side or tails side). This would include a historical National Park, Memorial or Site for each state, Washington DC (District of Columbia) and the 5 major US Territories. 5 different designs would be released each year, so only 1 quarter is scheduled to be released in 2021. Depending on the decision of the Secretary of the US Treasury, this program could be extended all the way through 2033. Some of the quarters in the America the Beautiful Series, depict parks and sites that were previously depicted on the State quarters. Arizona's Grand Canyon, California's Yosemite Park and South Dakota's Mount Rushmore are once again depicted in America the Beautiful, but the same sites will have different designs.
The mintage figures and volume of these coins produced is considerably less than the State quarters. On average, the State quarters had mintages of 200-300 million for each design. However, the America the Beautiful series had average mintages of between 20-30 million until 2013 when that figure went up to around 100 million for each park design. Some proof and silver coin sets are exceptionally rare compared to previous decades.
In addition to business circulation coins, the US Mint also produced special 5 ounce (140 gram) silver collector coins depicting each national site in the series. These are different than the standard silver quarters in proof sets. Instead, these special commemorative coins are about 3 inches in diameter, twice as large as a US silver dollar. These coins depict the same exact designs used on the regular sized quarters, but at a larger scale.
Below is a full table chart of all the quarters in the America the Beautiful Quarters series program. The table includes large, high quality images, pictures and photos, along with the State or Territory, year, release date for each coin, mintage figures for each mint (referenced to their value, prices and other details), details about which National Park or Site being honored and depicted on the reverse, and the designer and engraver of each coin. The National parks, memorials and sites have already been determined, but the rest of the details are yet to be determined. USA Coin Book will continue to add new pictures and details to the table as the new future coins are designed and introduced to the public:
