The American Innovation $1 Dollar Coin Program is the newest golden dollar coin series following the Presidential Dollar and Sacagawea Native American Dollar coin programs. This is a multi-year series that begins in 2018 and ends in 2032. The theme of this series is about honoring American innovations and innovators in each of the 50 States, the District of Columbia (Washington D.C.) and 5 US Territories.
The American Innovation Dollar begins in 2018 with just one coin design: The American Innovators Introductory Coin (depicted below). Starting in 2019 and in each year afterwards, 4 coins will be released per year - each coin with a unique design on the reverse (or back/tails side) of the coin for each US State and the innovation/innovator related to the State. These coins will also be released in the order that each State/Territory joined the Union. In fact, the order that these coins will be released, is the same as the 50 State Quarters Program - starting with Delaware. Also, these coins are not being released into circulation. In fact, the only way to obtain them is directly through the US Mint, by purchasing premium rolls, bags and proof sets.
The obverse (or front/heads) side of the coin will feature a common reverse that will appear on all of the coins over the years, depicting the Statue of Liberty with the words "IN GOD WE TRUST" and "$1" (designed by Justin Kunz and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill). The reverse will feature a unique design and the required inscription: "United States of America". The edge of the coin will consist of a plain, smooth edge with the words "E PLURIBUS UNUM", the year of mintage and the mint mark. The 2018 Introductory Coin features the Statue of Liberty on front and the words "AMERICAN INNOVATORS" and a representation of George Washington's signature, which was used on the first ever US Patent issued on July 31, 1790.
