Two years after the Coinage Act of 1792, the Flowing Hair Dollar was the first silver dollar coin struck by the United States Mint from October, 1794 before being replaced by the Draped Bust Dollar in October, 1795. The Flowing Hair Dollar is one of the rarest coins of U.S. coins provided that it has only been minted for a year and its scarcity. A few of these Silver Dollars embody a silver plug in the center. It is believed that the plugs were used for underweight planchets in order to make them weigh properly by inserting a silver plug into the center of the blank after drilling a hole into it.
This particular specimen boasts the central silver plug, making it a solid representative in all regards and is as such highly coveted. It is also more importantly, the single lowest graded example for the issue. The smooth surfaces are slightly toned, pertaining a silver-gray patina to soft lily hues, strong rims and a pleasing detail on the devices, all make this example. It truly demonstrates great eye appeal as it is also a pleasing example for the grade. This alluring AG Silver Dollar consists of only a handful of such die pairing that exhibit the central silver plug.
Boasting a single POP of 1 with none lower and only 101 finer with a survival estimate of only 250 in all grades, this unique Low Ball specimen will prove itself to be an exceptional part of anyone’s collection. Grades are typically seen in 5 or 6 figures and these climb very quickly to VF and XF to prices of $30,000+
