ATTRIBUTION:
Obverse: The peak of the 5 is embedded in the bust truncation. The L in LIBERTY almost touches the cap.
Reverse: ONE CENT is located high within the wreath. Weakly struck on the lower reverse with UN almost completely obscured (as is often seen even on some Mint State coins). Planchet flakes are typically seen on weakly struck areas. Die clash through ONE CENT. Die State VII: The right ribbon bow is separated from the left, and the right stem and ribbon end are separated from the knot.
The Plain Edge cents were minted late in the year, or early in 1796, following George Washington's declaration to lower the weight of the copper cents as a cost-saving measure due to increasing copper prices. The S-76b, is thought to be the first of the new lower weight cents struck on or after December 27, 1795.
Medium chocolate-brown patina with traces of lighter reddish-brown distributed over each side. Porosity surfaces and a small rim bump noted at 7:00.
