GENERAL COIN FACTS/DESCRIPTION:

The 1835 Coronet Head Large Cent, Head of 1836 is a variation of the Matron Head Large Cent, which was minted from 1816 to 1839. The "Head of 1836" designation refers to a modified design that started appearing in late 1835 and became the standard for 1836 cents.

On the Obverse is a portrait of Lady Liberty's profile, facing left, with her hair tied in a bun and secured by a beaded headband inscribed with “LIBERTY.” The Head of 1836 variety has a taller, thinner, and more delicate head design, compared to earlier versions. Stars surround the portrait, with the date 1835 below.   On the Reverse the words “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” can be seen around the edge with the denomination “ONE CENT” in the center surrounded by a laurel wreath with more delicate, refined leaves compared to earlier varieties.

Key Differences (Head of 1836 vs. Head of 1835):

  • The Head of 1836 has a taller, slimmer bust with more refined features.
  • The hair is more delicate and flows differently than the earlier Head of 1835, which had a shorter, rounder bust.
  • The lettering and stars appear slightly different in style.
