This is a replica/reproduction of an 1838 Gobrecht Dollar, that is marked 'COPY' on the reverse. The Gobrecht Dollars were minted in Philadelphia from 1836 to 1839. In 1838, it is believed that the dollars struck were pattern issues. They displayed a reeded edge and medal alignment on the reverse. They did not display the designers initials on the obverse, had stars on the obverse but no stars on the reverse. This particular reproduction displays the designers name on the obverse, stars on the reverse but no stars on the obverse, and the reverse is coin alignment. It is unknown just how many dollars were actually minted in 1838. This is a way of owning a replica of this rare denomination for filling a spot in a collection, or for educational purposes. The replica is made of copper with a silver plating and weighs 26.78+/- grams. It is 38.5+/- mm in diameter.
