This is a replica/reproduction of an 1839 Gobrecht Dollar, that is marked 'COPY' on the reverse. The Gobrecht Dollars were minted in Philadelphia from 1836 to 1839. In 1839, it is believed that the number of dollars struck was 300. They displayed a reeded edge, no designer name on the obverse and medal alignment on the reverse. They displayed stars on the obverse but no stars on the reverse. This particular specimen is dated 1839 but displays a PLAIN edge and coin alignment on the reverse. In addition, it displays a die alignment III (head of Liberty opposite N of ONE), versus the correct die alignment of IV (head of Liberty opposite F of OF). This is a way of owning a replica of this rare denomination for filling a spot in a collection, or for educational purposes. The replica is made of copper with a silver plating and weighs 22.62+/- grams. It is 37.5+/- mm in diameter.
