For three years (1839-41) New Orleans had been minting Seated Liberty Dimes and the total production had declined each year until 1843 when only 150,000 dimes were struck at New Orleans. This was a series low that was not topped until the 1860-O mintage of 40,000 when the U.S.A. was rupturing prior to civil war. I little doubt that part of the reason 1843-O has such a low mintage was due to the influenza outbreak in 1841 that blanketed the South especially in Louisana and Florida.
