The 1851-O Quarter Eagle is a misleading coin when it comes to trying to grade it by remaining design detail. This is because, with precious few exceptions, the reverse of this date is always poorly struck. Always be mindful of the need to grade this date primarily from the obverse.
Having that behind us, this is not an especially nice example, as the coin has been cleaned. While not evident in the photos, there are very fine hairlines on both sides which betray an effort at improving the coin's appearance. The color of the coin is a natural-looking muted green-gold, indicating that the cleaning took place some time ago.
Worth noting is an interesting artifact of what appears to have been a strike thru at the dentils at 12:00. One might easily jump to the conclusion that the coin was solder-mounted in this area, but that is definitely not the case.
