The first $50 Gold pieces to be issued under the authority of the California Historical Society. Total issue limited to 5,000 pieces
Each $50 Coin is struck from authentic Kellogg & Humbert ingots recovered from the ship S.S. Central America and contains 1309 grains of .887 fine gold. The original dies from Kellogg & Co. were used to make these historical commemorative pieces of California gold.
Each piece was struck between August 20 and September 12, 2001, representing each day the gold was at sea or aboard the Panama Railroad in 1857 and bear a hand crafted punch, designating the date of striking above the eagle's head and below the reverse scroll.
This coin was struck on September 2, 2001.
The coin is 1309 grains of .887 fine gold which is approximately 2.42 troy ounces Actual Gold Weight (AGW)
