The 1858-C is known to be one of the best struck Charlotte half eagles. This Charlotte Mint half eagle is no exception. Housed in an old PCGS green holder and graded as AU53, which seems to be a good deal finer by today’s standard. We’d say this specimen to be a sold AU55 with claims to an AU58. Though there are some scattered shallow abrasions from handling on both sides of the coin, they are typically seen as such. The surfaces and luster are clearly above average where significant amount of luster can be seen underlying below the light yellow-gold color surface of this specimen. There are no PCGS or CAC AU53 1858-C half eagle that have sold at auction and the most recent sale of an CAC approved example is an AU55 is for $8,400 06/24 ST, which by any standards though choice is inferior comparatively. This piece is sure to make a great type coin for any collector seeking to pull together a single high-grade lustrous Charlotte half eagle collection.
