1861-S Gold $20, Liberty Head TWENTY D., 'COPY' Stamped on Reverse

This is a replica of the 1861-S Liberty Head $20 TWENTY D. Double Eagle that is marked 'COPY' on the reverse. Liberty Head Double Eagles were minted from 1849 to 1907. From 1849 to 1866, they displayed NO Motto on the reverse. Those minted from 1866 to 1876 displayed the Motto (In God We Trust) above the eagle on the reverse. In 1861, two designs were minted; those with the normal reverse, and those with the Paquet Reverse. The Anthony C. Paquet designed specimen was withdrawn soon after being struck, and very few of these pieces are known to exist. This specimen displays the normal reverse. This is a way of owning a replica of this piece for filling a spot in a collection, or for educational purposes. The replica is made of brass with gold plating.
