Another interesting Civil War Token, dated 1863, with a shield on the obverse, and inscribed MERCHANTS - 40 MOHAWKS - COHOES, NY on the reverse. These tokens were minted by private entities and were used as circulating coinage to supplement government-issued pocket change, which was increasingly being hoarded during wartime.
