****Historical notes on pre-1900s coinage with holes: In the 1800s, many people made holes in their coins and strung them together and stored them in their hats, boots, pouches, etc... to prevent them from being lost while riding horseback. Holes in the coins were NOT generally made for wear as necklace pendants as many people often believe.
