ATTRIBUTION:
OBV. 10: Moderate repunching visible above the loops of the 66 and inside the bottom loop of the last 6. The portrait has a rough texture.
Die Stage A: Die striations from 11:30 to 5:30. Heavy die lines around date. Die Stage B: Die is reground. Some space between denticles.
Die Stage C: Die crack from bust point to top of U and from middle of U along tops of NITED to rim above S.
Die crack through base of portait and through feathers 7 & 8. Die crack from M to the rim above E. All die cracks faded. Convex die.
REV. (S): Thin denticles, with an area from 10:00 to 11:00 where the denticles are polished off the die completely. Die State B: Rim cud from 5:00 to 5:30 (not on this coin).
Die crack from the middle arrow to the rim at 4:00. Die crack from the rim at 11:30 to the shield and from the shield to the right wreath.
Chocolate-Brown surfaces with some original mint luster (gold-orange) seen under magnification.
Comments (Richard Snow): "This is the second die pairing. The new reverse die shows very thin denticles at 10:00. This is due to over-polishing of the die by the mint. A later die state shows a large rim break at 4:00 (not this coin)." Examples of this die pair hardly ever survives in uncirculated grades due to the center of the obverse is higher than the rim. This is a very unusual variety. The numerous die changes in the appearance in the dies make it an interesting subject of study. Many coins from this die pair are found with extra zinc and no tin alloy. These are extremely bright yellow and do not tone as easily as regular alloy coins.
Due to die deterioration, high grade examples of this obverse in die stage B and later may not show detail on the diamonds.
