Although the Civil War had ended a year earlier, gold and silver coins were slow in returning to circulation. So in 1866, the U.S. Mint struck over 4.8 million three-cent pieces to help make change, buy postage stamps (which were 3¢) and retire the fractional notes. Today, well over a century later, the odd 3¢ denomination and its classic design have vanished into the annals of history.
