Repunched Date, 1867/1867, FS-301 (old 002.1). Choice Almost Uncirculated, certified PCGS/CAC AU-58. This exact coin is one of the AU-58 images shown on PCGS CoinFacts for the variety. If you are viewing this listing, then you in all likelihood certainly know what you are looking at. In a word: RARE. A 100% original AU/Unc example of this important Shield Nickel variety. In the Condition Census, currently 3 in AU-58 at PCGS, with one MS-62 and one MS-64 previously graded (now no longer listed in the Pop); the NGC Pop consists of 2 in MS-62 (when last checked). Based upon how Shield Nickels are typically graded, those three MS-62's likely do not look much different, or much nicer, than the present example. I had held my breath that the Gods at PCGS might squeeze this into an Unc holder, but no joy. Regardless, you will wait for quite a while to find a replacement, let alone at this grade level. One of the two other AU-58's has sold four times between 2015 and August 2023, at between $2,000 and $4,000, most recently at $3,600; it is currently "on offer" with Heritage at $4,600+. The other example which while CAC is a bit dull and lacking luster, and does not have the surfaces of the example offered here in my opinion, sold at $3,120 in July, 2021. That seems to set a reasonable floor for a wholesale value. PCGS suggests a value for this variety of $3,500 in AU-55, $4,500 in AU-58. As for the price shown, it accounts for my ridiculous ebay fees. It can certainly be seen as a bit speculative, but seems within reason given the rarity, limited availability and auction records. However, I have also included a Make an Offer option. Please note that offers considerably lower than my asking price will be rejected out of hand. I am not desperate to sell this coin by any means, and am also a former PCGS Shield Nickel Registry Set owner and thus more knowledgeable about the series than most dealers, certainly on ebay. To that end, please be polite - you can always contact me to discuss the matter. Given, while this is the definition of a thin-market coin, as the saying goes, “go find one”, let alone one this nice and original. For the cabinet of the specialist in the series, and an important coin in the series. Please note that due to value, this will require Registered Mail shipping, which is slower delivery time; please take this into account prior to considering a purchase. Optional shipping by Insured Express Mail - BOTH services quoted are below my actual cost.

I combine all shipping charges to the minimum necessary to get purchases to the customer. Please be aware that the USPS has recently increased postage for package shipments and Insurance - $7-$9 for shipping may look like a lot, but it barely covers my actual cost.
