ATTRIBUTION:
Obv. II: The banner inscribed LIBERTY ends in two points aimed DOWN. Date is heavy, 1 and 8 touching.
Rev. II: There is no berry below eagle’s claw. Large S with doubling on most letters, especially on 420 GRAINS.
This 1877-S Trade Dollar with a doubled-die reverse is a fascinating and rare variety of this historic coin with nice original surfaces with golden-champagne toning. The reverse is nicely doubled, especially on 420 GRAINS. The doubling occurred during the die creation process, specifically in the hubbing process, when the die received multiple impressions that were slightly misaligned.
