Item Description
The 1881 is a MAJOR KEY DATE in Nickels Period. Within the Shield Nickel Series it has the second lowest mintage of the business strike dates. Only the 1880 is lower and it is worth 10X an 1881 in grade Vf-20 by comparison. (Yes 1877 & 1878 both have even lower mintage than 1880 but those two were PROOF ONLY issues NOT business strikes.) This coin is a real prize considering how original it is and how it is a no problem piece. Six of the stars have full line definition and another three come close to it. The shield has full vertical line separation and half of the horizontal lines are full. Right side leaves and the left side second from the top leaves have near full detail.
