The GSA graded this coin Uncirculated when it was prepared for sale.
This coin is truly Mint State and it can even be Proven! Well-known historical facts tell us where this coin has been. From those facts, it is easy to surmise that this coin was only touched by human hands and machines when it was minted in 1882 and encapsulated in plastic nearly 90 years later. The facts are that it was never circulated to the public. Instead, this coin and 3 million more like it were stored in government vaults and forgotten about. The coin cache was "Discovered" in 1964 during a GSA audit of the Treasury Department's silver dollar holdings. In the early 1970's the Treasury Department decided to package these coins and sell them to the public. President Nixon personally got involved with his statement imprinted on the box top which looked forward to the Nation's upcoming Bicentennial.
