1883 Liberty "V" Nickel "WITHOUT CENTS" (Lot 1582)
The 1883 Nickel "WITHOUT CENTS" is considered the World Famous Racketeer Nickel. When Liberty "V" Nickels first appeared in 1883, they didn't include the word "CENTS" - just a large Roman numeral "V" (five). Con artist, like Josh Tatum, found they could gold-plate them and spend them as $5 gold pieces. Tatum was eventually caught. But he had only bought 5 cent items with his coins and never asked for change he received. He was deaf and mute - so the judge found him innocent! Tatum couldn't possibly asked for change. This scam prompted the US Mint to add the word "CENTS" to the coin later in 1883.
The exact coin in the photographs is the coin you will receive. They say a picture is worth 1000 words, so we took several photographs for your review. The pictures are part of our description.
