1883-S Morgan Silver Dollar ANACS Photo Cert Type 10 (1/1987- 6/1990) AU 50/50

Tough Date 1883-S Morgan Dollar graded by ANACS as AU 50/50 (coin has been cleaned and not noted as it was not the practice at the time).

Housed in a "Type 10 old ANACS Photo Certificate Slab" which is a plastic flip and is not sealed.

While the coin is split graded by ANACS from the mid 1980's at 50/50, the coin has been cleaned. At the time, net grading was used, not the "details" grading we see today. The coin is closer to AU55 or 58, and has been net graded to 50/50, but the coin is hair lined from being cleaned.

While the coin is in an unsealed flip, the digital photo of the coin and serial number is confirmed simply enough when you compare the 2 toning spots on the reverse on the word America, there are 2 distinct toning spots that confirm this as being the coin originally graded by ANACS some 40+ years ago. It is clearly identical which helps affirm the coin has not been swapped since it was graded back in 1986/1987.

If you are unfamiliar with the ANACS photo certificates and the 10+ types that evolved over the generation from 1972-1986, when the first hard plastic encapsulated slabs were used, just Google ANACS Photo certificate. There is a thread from the Collectors Universe Forum, and within the first post, a link to a Google doc with all the generations of photo certificates and how to tell which one is which.

The Type 10 was the last one used before the changeover to hard plastic encapsulation and was in existence from approximately January 1987 through June 1990. The Type 9 and Type 10 "slabs" are very similar. Type 9 was black and white, and the type 10 is color and the type 10 is 5 3/16" long.
