This is a replica of the 1885 Trade Dollar that is marked 'COPY' on the reverse. Trade Dollars were minted from 1873 to 1885. The trade dollars of 1884 and 1885 were unknown to collectors until 1908. None of these dates are listed in the Mint director's report, and numismatists believe that they are not part of the regular Mint issue. Only 5 specimens of the 1885 trade dollar are now known to exist. This is a way of owning a replica of this rare coin for filling a spot in a collection, or for educational purposes.
