Circulated examples of the 1888 cent are common across all grades. Mint State pieces, however, are a bit scarcer than for other dates of similar mintage, and gems are truly rare. Also an issue for this date is weakness of strike. The example illustrated, for instance, lacks complete detail to the first three feathers.
Numerous die-punching varieties are found on 1888 Indian Head Cents, and the most popular of these are attributed by NGC under its VarietyPlus Service. Perhaps the most desirable variety in the Indian Head series, the 1888/7 overdate is very rare in any grade approaching Mint State. It is widely sought by both series specialists and general variety collectors.
