In A Guide Book of Flying Eagle and Indian Head Cents, author Rick Snow reported that the planchets used for this year's cent production were purchased from the Scovill Manufacturing Company of Waterbury, CT.
Examples are fairly common in all circulated grades, and Mint State pieces of mixed quality are likewise common. Gems are elusive, Bowers noted, due to uneven toning such as that seen in the coin illustrated. This specimen also displays die-clash lines on its reverse, Liberty's inverted profile being seen below letter C of CENT.
Given its large mintage, there's no surprise that cents dated 1890 have revealed numerous varieties, the best of which are recognized by NGC under its VarietyPlus Service.
