As the first official U.S. commemorative coin, this 90% silver half dollar was struck in limited quantities and issued to help fund the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The grand world's fair honored the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' discovery of the New World and was dedicated in October 1892, but didn't open until May 1893.
This important coinage first features a bust of Columbus on the obverse. The reverse, featuring Columbus' flagship Santa Maria over two globes, was engraved by George T. Morgan of Morgan silver dollar fame.
