1892 NGC MS66 $5 gold half eagle *SCARCE* A TRUE SUPERB BU GEM!
here's one tough grade no matter what date in the series. while this isn't extremely rare in mint state, I have seen some of the MS65's and 66's and they tend to have dullish luster and some are struck from fatigued dies. this is one of the nicest 1892 half eagles I have seen in the past decade. since MS66 pieces are occasionally available, please be careful to compare quality because I have seen some very low end specimens that wouldn't make my grade lately, mainly spotted and some that have more bag marks than many MS64's I have owned so caveat emptor (buyer beware). this coin has great eye appeal as you can see in the photos- it has super satiny luster and is an attractive orange gold in color. it exhibits strong detail as well and it is definitely original and uncleaned. there are few marks for the grade and what marks there are are well hidden and so minor they don't catch the eye. another premium piece for a world class collection and a super looking top of the grade superb gem to fill that empty hole in your set. just how rare is it? well, NGC has graded only 21 in this grade and only 9 higher in their entire 30 years in the grading business, with many of those being re-submissions fishing for a higher grade and profit to the submitters. PCGS has graded only 21 in all MS66 and 2 in MS67 in their 30 year history. stack these numbers up against any 1916-D dime, gem BU red 1909-S VDB cent or 1893-S Morgan dollar for relative rarity and sheer value. this is another numismatic treasure that few will ever be able to own and we are happy to be stewards of such a great coin, it has definitely graced our set as one of our very finest. many numismatic researchers and scholars agree that if just several new collectors came into the series in a serious way, these would finally realize their true value due to the competition for super rare dates like this one. the NGC online price guide puts the value of an average MS66 at $6,900.00 but try to find one as nice as this one for less than our asking price. with something like 500 or so registry sets of liberty half eagles on the top two TPG sites, this series is growing and gaining ground on the rest of the US series fast. with higher grades selling for significantly more, this may be the last time you see a moderately priced specimen offered for quite a while.
