The certified population of gem 1893 is a bit higher than for the several dates preceding it, but this does not take into account striking quality. Unless a coin is very poorly struck, this factor counts little in market grading. The specimen illustrated is lustrous and attractive, yet it suffers from obvious die erosion that has weakened some details and blurred the border denticles.
No varieties of significance have been found for the 1893 nickel.
