The economic depression that swept over America in the latter part of 1893 and lasted for several years accounts for the low mintage of cents in 1894. The supply of Mint State pieces is about normal for cents of the 1890s, because the circumstances that led to their retention remained similar, but worn pieces are somewhat more scarce than usual. It matters not, as both circulated and Mint State coins carry a premium due to their perceived scarcity.

This year produced what is among the most highly desired of small cent varieties. The entire date is distinctly repunched on the coin illustrated (FS-301, S-1). This variety is popular not only with Indian Head Cent collectors but with variety specialists as a whole.
