Due to the Panic of 1907, the mintage of nickels fell somewhat this year, but this is still a very common coin across most grades. The population of certified gems is lower than usual for post-1900 dates, and this issue may provide some challenge to the collector.

The year 1908 is notable for a far greater than usual number of repunched date and misplaced date varieties affecting several coin denominations, the nickel included. Perhaps this cluster of varieties is what prompted the Mint to begin including each denomination's date in the master die beginning in 1909. Thereafter, RPDs and MPDs became impossible.
