The coining of five-cent pieces plunged during 1909, though the 11+ million nickels produced that year was a low figure only in comparison to surrounding dates. Gems are in smaller supply than usual for the period, but this date is not truly rare. Poor strikes are less often seen than for other 1900-12 nickels.
From this date through 1912 the date was applied to the obverse master die for the year, so the repunched dates and misplaced dates common to earlier years no longer occurred.
