1909-P & 1909 V.D.B. Lincoln Wheat Cents (Lot of 2) (Lot D710)
The exact coin in the photographs is the coin you will receive. They say a picture is worth 1000 words, so we took several photographs for your review. The pictures are part of our description.
In 1909 the US Mint started the year minting the last Indian Head Cents. Then the US Treasury wanted to honor President Lincoln on the year he would have become 100 years old. President Lincoln was born in February of 1809. So the US Mint stopped minting the Indian Head Cents. The US Treasury employed a designer by the name of Victor David Brenner to design the first Lincoln Wheat Cent in 1909. However, Victor David Brenner, added his initials (VDB) to the reverse side of the new cent. So the second cent minted in 1909 was the 1909-VDB. When the US Treasury realized the VDB was on the reverse, they stopped minting 1909-VDB cents and removed Mr. Brenner's initials. So the 3rd Cent minted was the 1909 Lincoln Wheat Cent without the initials. All three versions of the 1909 cent were minted in Philadelphia and San Francisco. The fact that they spread the number of minted coins out to three versions makes the 1909 cents more desirable and harder to obtain.
