While common in circulated and lower Mint State grades, the 1916-S is rare at the present level of preservation. The San Francisco Mint cranked out nearly six million pieces of the final-year Barber dime issue, and proceeded to strike more than 10 million examples of the new Mercury design. Their high level of productivity resulted in only average sharpness on many Mint State survivors.
