1920-D cents were produced in great quantity, but quality was certainly not in the offing. With a sharply reduced staff since and widespread budget cuts since the war's end, mediocre coins would be the norm throughout the 1920s.
Very few 1920-D cents display sharp strikes, as the dies were used far too long. More typical are noticeably worn dies having distorted peripheral elements and one or more cracks (photos). Mint State survivors are seldom found fully red, and this issue presents a real challenge to collectors.
