1927-S Walking Liberty Half Dollar PCGS VF Details Cleaned Semi Key Date
PLEASE NOTE COINS ALSO FOR SALE ON EBAY. IF IT RECEIVES A BID, I HAVE TO CANCEL THIS LISTING
Just got back a recent submission of 34 coins from PCGS - 12 Walkers and 22 Morgans. I am not one to whine over coins being under graded or marked problem coins by PCGS or NGC.
That said, this is a nice evenly circulated coin with a nice patina of a choice VF condition.
Similar to the 1928-S graded F Details, cleaned by PCGS, this 1927-S appears very nice, with an original looking patina and a gunmetal brownish circulation tone that's typical of circulated Walkers. It appears to be in the choice VF range. Both breast outlines are visible though the right facing one is weak as typically seen. The eagle feathers are almost entirely full. The skirt lines are almost 100% and bold. The head details on Ms. Liberty are strong.
Also, like the 1928-S, I see no hairlines under 20x magnification, so I have to surmise PCGS declared it cleaned due to being a little "glossier" than one may expect for this level of circulation wear. It certainly isn't from harsh cleaning or cleaning that would cause hairlines. Maybe the previous owner used Coin Care on the coin? Totally guessing - I don't use Coin Care, but I am familiar with it and the look of a coin treated with Coin Care. Maybe PCGS has a way of detecting the presence of said chemicals on the surface. I am guessing. But I am guessing as the coin shows no evidence of cleaning to me. Perhaps my 20 years' collecting experience isn't enough, or maybe the winning bidder can tell me what I am missing if they disagree
