As with the cents, dimes, and half dollars struck with the Large S mintmark at San Francisco Mint in 1928, the 1928-S Large S Standing Liberty Quarter is actually a One Year Type Coin with that mint mark. The more common 1928-S Small S Standing Liberty Quarter bears the same style of mintmark San Franciso had been using on all of their American coins since 1917 and would continue to use all through 1940 without using a different style of mintmark except in 1928 with the Large S punch. It was only in 1941 & 1942 when San Francisco introduced a "Large S" punch that rivaled the old "Small S" those two years and then replaced it entirely in 1943.
